There was no actual plan to record the concert for release, but because Garner's manager Martha Glaser spotted a tape machine running backstage for the Armed Forces Radio Network, she decided to use the tape for commercial use. Glaser later played the tape to the head of Columbia Records' jazz division, George Avakian, who immediately decided to release it. As a result, it became Garner's most successful LP with over a million dollars' worth of confirmed retail sales.
